When I decided to dive into the world of stand-up paddling (SUP), I knew I needed an all-round board.
I am a beginner and wanted a board that is versatile, stable, and easy to handle.
After much research and recommendations, I came across the Moai 10’6 Allround SUP + paddle + leash – starter set.
My first experiences with the SUP board were simply fantastic.
This board offers everything a beginner needs to feel comfortable and safe on the water. Here are my impressions and experiences with this great board.
How it all began: Searching for the perfect start
It was a sunny Saturday afternoon last winter when I happened to think that I wanted to get back on the water.
The thought came and went as quickly as it arrived. But then spring was here, and I saw her when I came to a lake.
A group of people who seemed to glide effortlessly over the water.
Stand-up paddling - that's exactly what I'm looking for! I tried it years ago and my gut told me: That was fun.
I started researching, reading countless articles and reviews, and one thing quickly became clear: As a beginner, I needed an all-round board. Something stable, forgiving, but also versatile, that could grow with me. And then I came across the Moai 10’6 Allround SUP.
Why I chose the Moai 10’6
- Perfect for Beginners: The description promised stability and ease of use.
- Growth Potential: It also seemed suitable for advanced users.
- Versatility: Lake, river, even light waves - this board promised to handle it all.
- Complete Package: Everything I needed to get started was included.
With a mix of excitement and slight nervousness, I clicked on "Order".
Additionally, I ordered a kayak paddle and a kayak seat. Of course, I wanted to glide with the current while sitting comfortably.
A few days later, a large package was at my door, and my SUP adventure could begin.
Unboxing: First Impression and What's Inside the Package
When I opened the package, I was surprised by the abundance of the contents. Here is what was inside:
- The centerpiece: The Moai 10’6 SUP Board
- An adjustable fiberglass/aluminum paddle
- A reinforced trolley backpack with wheels
- A pump
- Three fins (one large removable and two smaller fixed)
- A safety leash
- A repair kit
Additionally, the following were added:
- The kayak seat
- The kayak paddle
I was impressed by the quality of the individual components. Everything felt high-quality and well-thought-out.
Especially the trolley backpack caught my eye - robustly built, with sturdy zippers and comfortable straps. The wheels are a real gamechanger, as I would often find out later.
A feast for the eyes: Design and color
When unpacking the board itself, I was immediately thrilled by the color. A fresh light blue with orange accents - exactly my taste! It looks sporty and exudes a certain lightness that perfectly matches the feeling of SUP riding.
The first setup: Easier than expected
With a mix of anticipation and slight nervousness, I started the first setup. To my surprise, it was much easier than expected:
- Unroll the board
- Open the valve and connect the pump
- Inflate to a maximum of 15 PSI (takes about 5–7 minutes)
- Insert the large fin (the two small ones are already fixed)
- Assemble the paddle
- Attach the leash
The very first time, it took me about 10 minutes because I examined each part closely and read the instructions (and I also took photos for the review).
Admittedly, during the first inflation, I struggled a bit with the pump. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it and pump efficiently.
Meanwhile, I have developed a routine and can complete the entire setup in just under 5 minutes.
One advantage: Since two of the three fins are already fixed, I save time during setup. The large, removable fin provides additional stability and improves straight-line tracking - a feature I didn't know before and have come to greatly appreciate.
The Paddle: Better than Many Others
I was impressed by the paddle. The plug-in functions are precisely crafted, making it feel like one piece.
The fine rubber coating on the handles is brilliant - even with wet hands, I always have a secure grip.
It is lightweight, easy to adjust in length, and still feels good in the hand even after hours of paddling.
The Maiden Voyage: Thrill and Pure Joy
With a pounding heart, I carried my inflated board to the water. The light weight of only 11 kg made the transport a breeze. Upon reaching the shore, I placed the board in the water, attached the leash to my ankle, and took the first step.
To my surprise, the board was much more stable than I had expected. Even as a beginner, I felt secure enough to stand up after just a few minutes.
The wide deck (81 cm) and the impressive stiffness of the inflatable board gave me the necessary confidence.
First experiences on the water
In the first few minutes, I felt a bit wobbly on my feet. I first had to learn to bend my knees slightly and keep my center of gravity low. Then it clicked, and here is my experience:
- Stability: Even with slight waves, the board did not wobble much.
- Maneuverability: Despite its size, the Moai 10’6 was surprisingly easy to steer. However, I needed some practice to master tight turns. Initially, I often made too wide a turn.
- Comfort: The slightly soft, non-slip deck was comfortable underfoot.
- Tracking: Thanks to the fins, the board stayed on course even in stronger winds.
At the lake, I met an experienced paddler with a hardboard. He was surprised at how stiff and stable my inflatable Moai was in comparison.
After an hour on the water, I was completely euphoric. The feeling of freedom, the tranquility on the water, the gentle movement of paddling - I was infected with the SUP virus!
From Lakes to Rivers: Putting Versatility to the Test
In the following weeks, I used the weekends to pursue my new hobby. From calm rivers, I soon ventured onto lakes. The Moai 10’6 showed its best side:
- On the lake: Great stability, even with waves when motorboats pass by.
- On rivers: Agile and perfect for relaxed paddling and nature observation.
- In the wind: The straight-line tracking helped to maintain direction well, even with crosswinds and waves.
👉 A special highlight was a trip on a side arm of the Spree (here is the link to Google Maps). The surroundings were dreamy - old trees leaning over the water, hidden coves, and an incredible tranquility.
👉 Also particularly memorable for me was the "Kleine Müggelsee", where I paddled among water lilies and even observed great waterbirds.
👉 On the "Dahme" near Berlin, I experienced real waves for the first time when motorboats passed by. Despite my initial nervousness, the board remained surprisingly stable.
The Moai 10’6 glided almost silently through the water, and I felt at one with nature. In such moments, I know why I fell in love with this sport.
Not just a board: A loyal companion for the whole family
What excites me most about the Moai 10’6 is its versatility and family-friendliness. With a maximum load capacity of 130 kg, it offers enough leeway for various adventures:
- Solo tours: Perfect for long, relaxed paddling trips.
- Family outings: I can easily take my two children with me! It is an indescribable feeling to share this experience with them.
- Luggage transport: The bungees at the front are perfect for securing a waterproof bag. For longer trips, additional bungees at the back would have been desirable.
Tip: A must-have for me: a waterproof smartphone case with a shoulder strap. This way, I can take photos anytime without having to worry about my phone.
Kayak Option: Two Boards in One
One feature that I initially underestimated are the attachment points for a kayak seat. On days when I want to be a bit more relaxed, I quickly transform my SUP into a comfortable kayak. This flexibility makes the Moai 10’6 a true all-rounder.
