👉 The key facts from this guide

  • I’ve been wearing the Vivobarefoot Primus Lite IV for several months—and it has become my favorite city shoe.
  • Strengths: Incredible barefoot sensation thanks to a mere 2 mm sole; very lightweight (235 g per shoe); wide toe box; quick to slip on and off; breathable; vegan; made from recycled materials.
  • Weaknesses: Slippery on wet forest floors; mesh upper is vulnerable to thorny undergrowth; relatively short lifespan with heavy outdoor use.
  • Who is it for? For anyone seeking an authentic barefoot shoe for the city, the gym, and light outdoor activities. Not for deep forests, mud, or root-filled trails—for those conditions, there’s the Tracker Forest ESC.
  • My Verdict: For €120 (RRP), you get a shoe that embodies the barefoot philosophy without compromise—but you need to know what it’s designed for.

I was looking for a city shoe.

It sounds banal at first, but it wasn't. I had two problems:

Problem 1: My Tracker Forest ESC is great - in the forest. On Berlin cobblestones, bringing the kids to school, and on the way to the bakery, however, it felt like too much shoe. Those deep lugs don't belong on asphalt. I wanted something lighter.

Problem 2: I had previously tried to master everyday life with cheap barefoot shoes. You can read about my experience with them here: Saguaro Unisex Barefoot Shoes Review. Spoiler: They also did their job, but the workmanship and the material were simply not on the level that I want today.

So: Something light. Something breathable. Something I can put on without thinking about it. But please with quality.

The Vivobarefoot Primus Lite IV had been on my list for a while. In spring, I went for it.

Transparency upfront

Before I get started: As in the review of the Tracker Forest ESC, this article is a recommendation in partnership with Vivobarefoot. If you buy through my link, I get a small commission - the price does not change for you.

I think that should be said openly.

And just as openly, I'll tell you: I don't recommend anything here that I think is garbage. If a shoe has weaknesses (and the Primus Lite IV has some - honest weaknesses), I'll write them down. My job is not to sell you something. My job is to help you find the right tool for your path into nature.

What caught my eye immediately when unboxing

Anyone who has ever opened a Vivobarefoot box knows: It's a different feeling than with most shoe brands.

The weight. Or rather: the *non*-existent weight. I lifted the shoe out of the box and quickly checked if I might only be holding one instead of two. At about 235 grams per shoe (in my size 44), it is lighter than most wool sock-shoe combinations I know.

The sole. 2 millimeters. That's all. When you hold the shoe in your hand and press on the sole, you feel it immediately: You will practically feel *every* ground structure when wearing it. That is intentional. That is the whole idea.

vivobarefoot primus lite iv 14 optimiert

The shape. The toe box is wide. Really wide. I have wide feet anyway, and the Primus Lite IV gives me more space at the front than 90 percent of all other shoes in my closet. This is not only comfortable - it is biomechanically important because your toes are supposed to splay when rolling off.

vivobarefoot primus lite iv 10 optimiert

The workmanship. Mesh, recycled from polyester. The seams are clean. The laces are thick and grippy - they don't constantly slip open. This is a difference from the predecessor model, where many testers complained about loose laces.

What is not there. No leather. No steel toe cap. No cushion that "supports" the foot. No drop (Zero Drop). No rigid sole. The shoe is basically a flexible shell that protects your foot from direct contact with the ground - nothing more.

And that is precisely its strength.

In which situations I actually wear the shoes

Let me get specific. Here is where the Primus Lite IV is used by me:

Everyday Berlin life - here it shines

Shopping, school, walks, appointments in the city, going out for dinner with friends in the evening. This is the comfort zone of the shoe.

On asphalt, concrete, smooth sidewalks, it works excellently. You feel the ground - every unevenness, every cobblestone, every crack. This takes some getting used to at first, but quickly becomes a kind of "massage" for your feet.

What I particularly like: How quickly I slip in and out. Laces do not have to be constantly retied. Once adjusted correctly, I slip into the shoe in the morning like into a slipper.

Campsite and wilderness gatherings

Here it gets nuanced. On the firm campsite, during seminars, during material setup, when crafting, when sitting by the campfire - perfect.

But when we go out into the woods, especially after rain, through blackberry brambles or over muddy forest paths, I switch to the Tracker ESC from Vivobarefoot. The shoe is rather not made for that.

You can find more about what I really use for the wilderness in my complete equipment list.

Dry forest walks with the family

In spring, on dry days, on firm forest paths with the boys - of course that works. Here, the shoe is even great. Every branch, every crackle under the foot is noticeable.

But: As soon as the ground gets damp, it becomes tricky. The sole is optimized for dry terrain.

Where the shoe definitely does not belong

Deep muddy forest. Root paths after rain. Mountain hikes. Multi-day outdoor tours. Schnee. Ice. Bushcraft weekends with thorny hedges.

For all of that, there are better options at Vivobarefoot - first and foremost the Tracker Forest ESC, which I have tested extensively.

Primus Lite IV vs. Tracker Forest ESC - the honest overview

Because I wear both shoes and you might be wondering which one you need:

Feature Primus Lite IV Tracker Forest ESC
Main Purpose City, gym, light paths Forest, bushcraft, outdoor
Weight (per shoe, size 44) approx. 235 g approx. 525 g
Sole 2 mm flat, hexagonal 2.5 mm + 7 mm lugs (Michelin)
Upper Material Recycled polyester mesh Wild Hide leather
Vegan? Yes No
Water Resistance Very low Good (with care)
Breathability Excellent Very good
Price (MSRP) approx. €120 approx. €230
Break-in Period Medium Short (for barefoot experienced)
Repairable (Revivo) Yes Yes

My tip: If you only buy one shoe and are mainly out in the woods, take the Tracker Forest ESC. If you primarily live in the city and want to try barefoot shoes, the Primus Lite IV is the better entry point.

Ideally, you have both. That's how I do it.

What international testers say

So that you don't just hear my opinion: The shoe is classified in English-language outdoor magazines very similarly to how I do.

OutdoorGearLab tested the shoe and writes, in essence, that it is excellently suited for the gym, but would not be their first choice for extended outdoor use. The testers praise the excellent ground feel and confirm the lack of traction on loose or wet ground.

RunRepeat measured in the lab: The shoe has the lowest bending force of all training shoes ever tested - only 2.5 Newtons to bend the shoe by 30 degrees. This means: It is extremely flexible. Exactly what you want in a barefoot shoe.

Consensus from 15+ independent sources that I evaluated for this article: Great for city and gym. Conditionally suitable for light trails. Not suitable for demanding wilderness.

Pros and Cons - my honest overview

What I love:

  • Crazy barefoot feeling - you really feel the ground
  • Very light, like a sneaker
  • Wide toe box - my toes have room to splay
  • Laces do not slip (big plus compared to predecessors)
  • Breathable, perfect for warm days
  • Vegan and made with recycled materials
  • 100-day trial run by Vivobarefoot - you can try it extensively
  • Repairable via the Revivo program

What you need to know:

  • No traction on wet or loose ground - it slips here
  • Mesh is sensitive - thorny hedges, sharp-edged stones take a toll on it
  • Durability is the biggest weak point: With intensive use, some testers report signs of wear after 3-6 months. With moderate city use, the sole lasts 500-1000 km
  • Midfoot area can be tight - if you have very wide feet or a high instep, try on beforehand
  • No half sizes - that is annoying if you are between two sizes
  • Price in the upper midfield with longevity that doesn't quite match it

Who is the shoe for - and who is it not for?

✅ Buy it if:

  • You live in the city and are looking for an everyday shoe
  • You want to try out barefoot shoes and want something high-quality straight away
  • You train in the gym, doing strength training or functional movement
  • You value vegan products and recycled materials
  • You do light outdoor activities (dry forest paths, walks)
  • You are looking for maximum ground contact after yoga, strength training, or mobility exercises

❌ Do NOT buy it if:

  • You are primarily out in the woods or on trails - then take the Tracker Forest ESC or the Primus Trail
  • You are often out in the wet
  • You are looking for a shoe that survives years of hard outdoor use
  • You have very wide feet with a high instep (try on before buying)
  • You value ankle protection or waterproofness

Sizing tip from practice

According to my research and experience, the Primus Lite IV runs slightly longer than classic sports shoes. Furthermore, there are no half sizes.

How to proceed:

  1. Measure your foot from the heel to the longest toe (while standing, on a piece of paper).
  2. Add 0.5 to 1.5 cm of wiggle room - I recommend 1.0 cm.
  3. Compare with the size chart on the Vivobarefoot page.
  4. If you are between two sizes:
    • Narrow foot → rather the smaller size
    • Wide foot / high instep → rather the larger size

For me, my normal 44 fit perfectly. If you are unsure - make use of the 100-day trial run. You can even return the shoes worn.

Care - how to keep the shoe for a long time

The Primus Lite IV is easy to care for, but not care-free:

Regularly:

  • Knock off coarse dirt with a soft brush
  • Wipe damp if necessary (no water bath)
  • Remove the insole and dry separately
  • Open the laces so that the shoe airs out properly

Occasionally:

  • Wash shoes in the machine (cold wash, no spin, laces out)
  • Let dry in the air, never on the heater
  • Stuff with old newspapers when drying to maintain the shape

Tip against odor: With the All-Weather model, wearing it without socks is viewed critically. With the classic mesh model, wearing it barefoot is less problematic because the mesh breathes. Nevertheless: Treating it occasionally with a bit of baking soda or a few drops of tea tree oil on the insole helps.

My conclusion after several months

Would I buy the shoe again? Yes.

Is it perfect? Almost.

Does it replace my wilderness shoe? Absolutely not.

But: It has found a clear role in my life, and in this role, it is great. City. Everyday life. Walks with the boys. Light exercises. Seminar presentations. Material purchasing. Train rides.

What I particularly appreciate: The shoe is honest. It doesn't claim to be a hiking boot. It doesn't try to do everything. It is exactly what it pretends to be: a light, breathable barefoot shoe with real ground feel for urban everyday life.

And it does that excellently.

vivobarefoot primus lite iv 01 optimiert

So if you live in the city and are looking for a barefoot shoe that accompanies you daily - the Primus Lite IV is an honest recommendation.

But if you are in the woods more often - don't buy the Primus Lite IV, but go straight for the Tracker Forest ESC. I won't sugarcoat anything for you that doesn't fit your life.

Maybe, like me, you'll end up having both. One for indoors-city-everyday life, the other for the woods. That would be my recommendation if you seriously want to integrate Vivobarefoot into your life.

You can find more on the topic of outdoor equipment that I actually wear in my complete wilderness equipment list.

If you already wear the Primus Lite IV - write your experiences in the comments. I am curious how it is doing for you.
